Paris, TN – Henry County High School senior, Owen Stevenson, has been nominated to the United States Air Force Academy by Congressman David Kustoff. Principal Michele Webb affirms the Congressman’s office called the high school on November 19 and spoke directly with Stevenson to congratulate him. Stevenson said, “Congressman Kustoff said he was calling me from Washington to let me know that he nominated me and asked me to keep him updated on my progress.”
Appointment to the Academy is a competitive process and Stevenson has been working on his application since March. The application requires the candidate to have at least a 24 in English/reading and a 25 in math/science on the ACT; a teacher evaluation, a writing sample, a strong academic record, a physical assessment, and evidence of extracurricular/leadership involvement within his school and community. Stevenson is enrolled in Honors, dual credit, and Advanced Placement courses and is also participating in a work-based learning position for computer science with Andrew Wheatley at Wheatley Technology, LLC as a junior developer. “I’ve been working lead on different websites, most recently a federal website for Land Between the Lakes.”
Stevenson says his real passion is to fly. “I would like to get an aerospace degree and fly in the Air Force once I graduate.” Stevenson says he has always been fascinated with flying and loves math and science courses. “There’s not a better career that I can think of than flying for the Air Force.”
The 17-year-old son of Amanda Wade from Paris, Stevenson also has a brother who was nominated to the Academy and is presently in the ROTC program at Rhodes College in Memphis.
