Paris, TN- To be college and career ready means different things to different students which is why Henry County High School provided students an opportunity to choose their own College and Career Ready rotations for Spring semester. Senior students gathered in the gymnasium to select their rotation courses for their spring semester CCR class, choosing from topics including Paying for Life After High School, Basic Car Care, Online Safety, and earning different industry certifications. Some of the certification options include OSHA 10, CPR, Personal Financial Literacy, Express Employment Business Technology, Southwest Airlines Professional Communication, FAA Part 107, NC3 Snap-On Hand Tool Identification, and Safety Certification.
Depending on the student’s pathway, General Industry, Automotive, Health Care, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Criminal Justice, or Construction, the selections give students an opportunity to graduate as a Ready Graduate and/or a Graduate with Distinction.
Every student at the high school is enrolled in what they call a “skinny block” which is only 40 minutes compared to the 90-minute regular block classes. The College and Career Ready rotations take place during the skinny block and prepare students for, you guessed it, attending college or starting their career once they graduate in May.
CTE Director and CCR 12 Lead, Betsy Allison surveyed students to identify any gaps in learning that students may have. “We’ve always focused on life skills and students and parents appreciate these classes, but we also received feedback from students who had different ideas of what they would like to learn.” Senior TaNiyah Davis agreed that she loved getting to pick what she wanted to learn instead of being put into a course. Senior students will start the skill rotations in January and will change rotations every two to four weeks.
