Puryear, TN – Step into the rotunda at D & N Harrelson Elementary School and see students dressed in attire they might wear at a job in the future. There are students dressed as police officers, soldiers, artists, gaming designers, influencers, health professionals and more, ready to talk about the profession they’ve chosen.
Seventh and eighth grade students take an interest inventory or an aptitude assessment each year to explore their career interests and their natural abilities. Seventh grader, Trinity Bennett who is in a Servall t-shirt, says she wants to work in this company because her dad works at Servall. She explains she has visited many times with her dad and thinks it’s interesting to learn about the different insects. With her is an eighth grader, Macie Smith, who is dressed in scrubs. She says she is interested in going into nursing just like her mom. “My mom is a nurse with Dr. Cutright. I’m not sure I want to be in a surgery, though, it’s pretty gross.” Macie says her interest inventory predicted she would be in the health care field. She will be choosing the health science pathway when she registers for ninth grade.
Eighth graders will be registering soon for high school classes. It is recommended that families look at their students' interest and aptitude results and explore the pathways offered at the high school with their school counselor and STEM teachers.
