Paris, TN –Amelia Northam and Cole Edwards have each been awarded the Ned McWherter Scholars Program scholarship to attend the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. The award will be $6,000 per academic year and can be renewed for a total of $24,000 over four years.
To be eligible to receive the award, students must have a minimum of a 32 on the ACT, at least a 3.75 GPA, attend an eligible Tennessee college or university within 16 months of high school graduation, and be a resident of Tennessee and a U. S. citizen, permanent resident, or an eligible non-citizen.
Both students will be attending university in Knoxville this fall and have plans to study engineering. Northam will be majoring in Material Science and Engineering and plans to work with companies to help determine what materials will benefit their company. Her goal is to analyze polymer section plastics and learn how different plastics will be more decomposable and ecologically sustainable. “I think Tennessee is beautiful and seeing plastic litter makes me sad.” She hopes her work will make a difference in the world. She is the daughter of Sharon Sabin of Paris, TN
Edwards will be majoring in Computer Engineering. He is unsure of the specific field but hopes that internships will help him find his niche in the computer engineering sector. Edwards was also recently recognized at the high school for making a perfect score of 36 on the ACT. He is the son of Chad and Samantha Edwards of Springville, TN.
